Model-based engineering of Digital Twins for early verification and validation of Industrial Systems

Industrial systems are becoming ever more automated, intelligent and autonomous, which raises the stakes on their correctness, reliability, availability and traceability. Digital twins, virtual counterparts of physical systems that are kept in sync with them, help to simulate, test, predict and monitor system behaviour. However, the most effective digital twin solutions are still expensive and slow to build, and hard to keep valid as the real system evolves.
MATISSE brings together about 30 academic and industrial partners from 7 European countries to build a model-based framework for the efficient, continuous engineering and validation of industrial systems supported by digital twins. The framework combines model-driven, data-driven and cloud techniques to automate how digital twins are created and federated, then offers verification and validation, prediction and monitoring services on top of them. The results are evaluated on 7 industrial use cases.
Softeam leads WP1, covering use case analysis and the MATISSE general architecture, and leads the tasks on architecture definition and roadmap (T1.3) and on case study support and feedback analysis (T4.4). Softeam contributes the model-based requirements engineering process and tools, a SysML extension for engineering digital twin federations, and methods for model-based continuous validation of digital twin federations. Two tools carry these contributions: extensions of the Modelio workbench for model-based coordination of federated digital twins, and RQCODE for lightweight automated formalisation and continuous validation of requirements.

Provide a cloud-based, model-driven framework that automates the engineering, integration and federation of digital twins.
Continuously validate digital twins against the functional and non-functional properties they must satisfy, throughout their life cycle.
Offer domain-independent digital twin services for verification, validation, simulation, smart prediction and monitoring of industrial systems.
Ensure traceability between design-time models and runtime data, so that digital twins stay consistent with the systems they represent.
Demonstrate the framework and services on 7 industrial use cases, and exploit the results through open-source and commercial tools.
The consortium includes about 30 partners from 7 countries.
