Programme(s):
HORIZON.2.6 - Food, Bioeconomy Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment
HORIZON.2.6.5 - Food Systems
Topic(s):
HORIZON-CL6-2022-GOVERNANCE-01-10 - Piloting approaches and tools to empower citizens to exercise their “data rights” in the area of food and nutrition
Call for proposal: HORIZON-CL6-2022-GOVERNANCE-01
Funding Scheme: HORIZON-AG - HORIZON Action Grant Budget-Based
Objective:
The data economy holds great promises for making food systems more sustainable. Data collected in digital solutions in the food and nutrition domain could be used by food producers, distributors, retailers to innovate towards more environmentally-friendly activities. However, the currently used platforms are closed, and do not allow citizens to exercise their rights to personal data sovereignty. Moreover the closed aspect of these platforms hinders the possibility to use these data for common good even if users gave their consent to share their anonymised personal data.
It is time for Europe to ensure a healthy ecosystem of Digital Solutions for food and nutrition that respect citizens' right to personal data sovereignty. FOODITY will run a 2M€ pilot development program funding 12 Industry and research collaborations to develop pilots demonstrating the potential of data-driven innovations in health and nutrition, engaging citizens in their development. The pilots will demonstrate the potential of user’s personal data in health and nutrition solutions to contribute to more just and environmentally-friendly food systems, reaching over 200,000 citizens in our communication actions.
The FOODITY Pilot development program we provide it's beneficiaries with a set of value adding services including one-to-one mentoring, training on technical business and legal topics relevant, as well as technical support into assets to which beneficiaries can use as building blocks the development of the pilots. FOODITY builds on the PROTEIN H2020 project will provide state-of-the-art tools and software components as building blocks for the development of personalised nutrition solutions, and the PoSeID-on H2020 project Provides a deployment-ready solution for trustworthy secure large-scale data sharing transactions, full GDPR compliance and relying on the centralised technologies and digital identity, thus guaranteeing the personal data sovereignty of the end users.
Data rights in digital food and nutrition solutions
Most popular tools and platforms (e.g. wearable devices and software applications) are closed and limit citizens’ rights to personal data sovereignty and transferability. This limits the possibility of using it for the common good, even if users consent to share their anonymised personal data.
It is time for Europe to ensure a healthy ecosystem of digital solutions for food and nutrition that respect citizens’ right to personal data sovereignty — and demonstrate the potential of data-driven innovations in this area, engaging citizens in their development.
SOFTEAM's Role:
Softeam leads the FOODITY Data Lake
The purpose of the Foodity data lake is to serve as a centralised repository for storing and analysing large volumes of data related to Food and nutrition domains. The data lake is accessed through a website that allows researchers and citizens to access public data while adhering to GDPR regulations. The data lake and website for Foodity will enable the collection and utilisation of food-related data while safeguarding privacy rights and adhering to GDPR regulations.
The Foodity data lake enables data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to explore, process, and extract insights from diverse data sources. It provides a scalable and reliable solution for storing data that can be used for various purposes such as business intelligence, analytics, machine learning, and data mining.
By consolidating data from different sources into a data lake many stakeholders can take advantage of this:
Citizens can use the website to search for information on healthy products in their region or explore the composition of specific products.
Entrepreneurs and food producers can perform advanced analytics, uncover patterns, and gain valuable insights that can drive informed decision-making and enhance the overall understanding of their business operations, customer behaviour, and market trends. Startup entrepreneurs can access public data to develop innovative products and services.
Researchers, the data lake will provide researchers with valuable information on healthy products, and product composition, and enable research studies on cancer/obesity risk factors. It will also serve as a platform for journalists and entrepreneurs to access public data for their respective purposes.
